Granny's Vintage Squares

This was a fun quilt to do.  I love the vintage feel.  A friend of ours has recently done several quilts with granny square blocks.  You can check out her versions at myquiltdiet.blogspot.com.  As we were considering what to do with the fabrics we had selected for this month's mystery we remembered her quilts.  Thanks for the inspiration Marion!

Arrange the 2 1/2 inch squares as shown below.  You will use four different fabrics (including the background fabric) in each of the blocks.   Vary the fabrics from block to block.

Sew the squares together into rows.  Press the seams in opposite directions from row to row.  Sew the rows together to form the block.  Create 20 blocks.

Square the blocks.  Make sure to leave at least 1/4 inch seam allowance so the points of the squares are not cut off when the sashing is added.  We squared our blocks to nine inches.  Your's may vary depending upon your sewing methods.  Not to worry.  Square them up as large as you can.  Make sure to adjust the sashing length to match the block size.

You will need to create 20 granny square blocks.  Arrange the blocks into five rows with four blocks in each row.  (We took the photo before all of the blocks were finished but you get the idea.)

Sew a 2 1/2 by nine inch sashing strip between each of the blocks in the row.  (If your blocks are not nine inches, adjust the sashing strip accordingly.)

Sew a 2 1/2 inch background strip between each of the rows.

Sew a 2 1/2 inch background all around the quilt.

Sew a 2 inch strip of the strawberry striped fabric to all four sides.

Finsh with a 2 1/2 inch background strip sewn around the entire quilt.

Quilt as desired.  Bind and enjoy!

Thanks so much for participating in our mystery quilt program.  Please tell all your friends - we would love to increase our numbers.  For those who may not live close enough to pick up the kits at the shop we will be happy to ship.  The kits will fit in a flat rate envelope which we can ship for only $6.00.

Here is a peek at December mystery quilt fabrics.  We will move the December date up one week to Dec. 18th because I'm sure you don't want to visit us on Christmas Day.
