February mystery quilt revealed

The February mystery has been solved!  What an excellent way to welcome Spring.

We added an optional border. 

If you are feeling a little sad that you didn't sign up we have 3 extra kits which include border and binding for only $56.00.

We are so excited to welcome our daughter home from her mission tomorrow.  Many of you know we have been working on redecorating her room.  A few of you have asked to see how it turned out so we are posting a photo.  She really likes blue so we painted the walls a light blue.  We enjoy finding new uses for old things.  Her headboard is a door from Kelly's family home.  The window frame behind the wreath was from the same home.  A couple of old desk drawers became a nightstand.  The rag rug is from a lot of leftover binding strips as well as a couple of old sheets.  The room turned out very calm and relaxing.

January mystery quilt and other

Just a little reminder.  This Friday is the first Friday of the Month.  We have added fabrics to the shelf for the $5.55 sale.  Among them are fabrics we used for the current buck a block quilt.  If you need backing it's a great way to get it.

Since the 10th is the second Saturday that we would normally pass out the buck a block kits - we are planning on having them ready a week early.  Or you can pick them up the week following Feb. 10th.

December Mystery quilt

So sorry!  We rushed right in to the Christmas Holidays and forgot to post a photo of the December Mystery Quilt. 

So.... here it is.

The beautiful home spun fabrics from Moda lend themselves nicely to the simple patchwork pattern.  We backed the quilt with a soft green minky fabric.  What a cuddle quilt this turned out to be.

November Mystery quilt and more savings

September mystery quilt

Becky says, "Check out the chicks in our shop".

It's the September mystery quilt.  I think it turned out way fun!

July Mystery quilt

We are posting a photo of the July Mystery quilt for your reference.  The quilt ended up measuring about 67" x 86" so it is the largest quilt we have done in a while.  Perfect for your favorite little one.

 Oh, and don't forget the matching pillow case. 

The August mystery fabrics are on their way.  We will post them as soon as we get them in so check back.

June mystery quilt

This month's quilt was inspired by another block we recently completed for our "Bee Haven" block party quilt.

We loved the way it turned out and decided it would be fun to see in different colors.

And it was fun to see!

The pattern calls for top and bottom borders of white.  We didn't add them for the photo because we plan to enlarge the quilt to twin size.

The quilt is not difficult to make but it did take a little more time to complete than some of our monthly mystery quilts.  So we are going to walk you through the blossom making process.  It is really just a dresden plate in two colors.

First - sew the 3 1/4 inch print strip to a 3 1/4 inch red strip.

Create a template using the diagram included with the pattern.  Carefully cut the wedges alternating the direction of the template.  You will need 32 wedges for each blossom.  Your kit includes an extra print square to create the 32nd wedge.  Make sure you have 16 of each direction to complete the blossom properly.

Fold the wedges in half along the length with the right sides facing.  Sew 1/4 inch along the wider end.

Snip the corner to eliminate bulk.

Turn the wedge inside out, making sure the corner is completely turned to properly complete the point.

Press and sew the wedges together.  It is important to use an accurate 1/4 inch seam allowance so the completed blossoms lie flat.  (A little bit of Best Press or other spray starch may come in handy.)  Make sure the print and red sections alternate properly.

Use a little dab of washable school glue on each tip to hold in place on the background square.  Stitch to secure.  Applique the circle in the center to finish the block.  Create 9 blocks.

We used pre-printed squares for the sashing strips.  Make sure you cut exactly between the rows of  squares from selvedge to selvedge. 

Follow the instructions in the pattern to complete the quilt.

August mystery quilt

We apologize for not getting the August Mystery quilt tutorial posted.  We have been concentrating on getting ready for shop hop in a couple of weeks and haven't got the tutorial ready.  We have posted a photo of the finished quilt below as a reference.  If you just follow the written instructions you shouldn't have any problems. 

July 2016 mystery quilt

Hope you (local folks) enjoyed a great holiday as we celebrated Pioneer day here in Utah.  It was nice to have some time at home to catch up on a few of the many things that need attention around the house.  It was especially nice to spend some time with the family.

Before we get into today's tutorial, we wanted to pass on a tip from one of our quilting friends.  She is working on the Payson temple quilt with us and had the idea to use an angel moroni tie tac at the top of the temple instead of stitching it.  Wish we had thought of this before doing the stitching.

The July mystery quilt.

Read through the instructions to become familiar with the process.  Cut according to the directions.

Cut all of the squares in half diagonally.

Sew a black strip to one of the halves.

Sew the other half of the square to the other side of the black strip.  Make sure to align both ends with the first half. 

Press toward the triangles and square the block to 7 inches square.  (A nine inch square up ruler works really well for this.  Make sure to place the diagonal line on the ruler in the exact center of the black strip.)

Repeat to create a total of 64 blocks.

The blocks are assembled in eight rows with eight blocks in each row.  Layout the blocks to distribute the colors to your liking and then sew the rows together.  Alternate the direction of the black stripe from block to block to create the lattice look.

Add the stripe border to the top and bottom of the quilt.  Complete with the final border on all four sides.  The completed quilt measures about 63 x 68 inches. 

 

As we were making the quilt one of our daughters (the one that usually doesn't care about quilts) mentioned that she kind of liked this one.  So we are going to make the quilt a little larger to fit her twin sized bed.   We will add two more rows of blocks.  The first border will be all the way around instead of just top and bottom.  The final border will be increased to seven inches.  It will finish about 70 1/2 x 83 1/2 inches. 

We still have most of the fabrics available if you would like to make yours larger.

June mystery quilt

Thanks for your understanding in moving the mystery quilt back a day. 

Becky came up with another fun creation this month.  Let's get started.

Your kit contains 12) 1/4 yard cuts.  Cut each according to the instructions.  We included a cutting diagram to help you make sure you get all of the pieces needed.  Each print will become a background in one block and arrows in a different block.  You may want to sort the prints at the beginning to make sure you get the contrast needed in each block.

Sew a 2½” arrow piece to each end of a 5½” x 8½” background rectangle. Sew a 2” x 5½” background to each end of this unit. This will be the center section of the block.

Sew a 2” x 5½” background to both sides of a 2½” x 5½” arrow rectangle.  Repeat to create 2 units.

To create the flying geese units place 2) 3½ inch background squares onto a 6½ inch arrow square as shown below.  Draw a diagonal line and stitch ¼ from the line on both sides.  Cut on the drawn line and press toward the triangles.  (We have used this method in a previous quilt so I am borrowing the photos from it.  Don't let the fabrics confuse you)

 

Place one of the remaining 3½ inch background squares on one of the units created above aligning the straight edges of the squares.  (See below.)  Make sure the fabrics are right sides together.  Draw a diagonal line through the square.       

Sew ¼ inch from the line on both sides.  Cut on the line.  Repeat with the remaining 3½ inch square and the other unit.  Press the triangles back and square the geese to measure 3” x 5½”.  

  

Sew a 3” x 5½” background to the top of the four flying geese units.   

 Sew a flying geese unit to each end of a rail unit as shown below.  Create two for each block.

 Assemble the block as shown below.

 Create a total of 12 blocks from the different fabric combinations.

Arrange the blocks in rows of three.  Sew a 15½” sashing strip between the blocks in each row.

Use the 2½” inch strips to create three sashing strips 49½” long.  (Check the width of your quilt and adjust if necessary.) 

Sew the 3” strips all around the quilt to create the final border.

Quilt as desired.  Bind and enjoy!
