We were very happy with the way this month's mystery quilt turned out! Even our daughter who in the past has instructed us not to give her a quilt as a gift said, "Can I have it if I name my first child Vroom?" All of our kids liked it. Hope you like it as well.
We began with the two rows of large star blocks.
We used four different fabrics for the stars. Match each of the colored squares with a background square making sure the right sides are together and the outside edges are aligned. Draw a diagonal line on the back of the background squares. Sew 1/4 inch on each side of the drawn lines.
Cut the squares at the halfway vertically and horizontally as well as on the diagonal lines.
Square the resulting half square triangles to 3 1/2 inches.
Arrange components as in the photo below to complete the star block. Create 8 star blocks.
The winding road is made with 16 half square triangle blocks. Match the green pin dot with the background squares making sure the right sides are together and the outside edges aligned. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the back of the background squares. Sew 1/4 inch on each side of the drawn line.
Cut apart on the line. Square the resulting blocks to 6 1/2 inches.
Sew the 16 blocks together to form the long and winding road as in the photo below.
From leftover pieces of your choice, cut the needed length to create the applique row. Sew one to each end of the newsprint strip to create the 48 inch length.
We used alphabet letters from Quiltsmart to add VROOM to the applique background.
You simply place the fusible side of the interfacing to the right side of your chosen fabric. Sew on the solid line and cut on the dotted lines.
Cut a slit in the interfacing and turn the whole thing right side out. Press to fuse on the desired background and stitch to secure.
The O needs the center cut out carefully from the interfacing. It will be sewn to a separate fabric and placed over the circle part of the O.
You can also choose your favorite font and applique method. It might be fun to personalise the quilt with a name.
Match a blue star square with the all over car square with the right sides together and outside edges aligned. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner. Sew 1/4 inch on each side of the line. Cut on the line and press open. Place the resulting half square triangles together with opposite fabrics facing and the seams running parallel to each other.
Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner across the existing seams. Sew 1/4 inch on each side of the line. Cut on the line and press open.
Create a total of 4 blocks. Square the resulting blocks to 12 1/2 inches. Arrange as desired and sew together to form a row.
Sew all of the rows together. We sewed them in the following order.
1. Star row
2. Long and winding road
3. ZOOM row
4. Star row
5. Quarter square triangle row
Carefully cut the rows of cars to create the final border. You should be able to cut about a 5 1/2 inch strip. Adjust the width as necessary to center the cars to your liking. Create the needed length and sew borders to the sides of the quilt. Sew the top and bottom borders to the quilt.
We used some of the leftover cars from the border fabric to applique to the winding road. (There weren't many left over - you may want to consider purchasing extra fabric if you would like more cars to applique.)
