Hippity Hoppity - March mystery quilt is here

Spring is here!  The weather has been wonderful and the sunshine renews the soul.

In celebration of the annual renewal of life, Becky has designed a quilt to celebrate the Spring season.  It's as colorful and cute as a bed of newly blossoming spring flowers.

Before we get started, we just want to thank you for participating in our mystery quilt program.  We appreciate your support and look forward to visiting with you each month as you pick up your kits.  Many of you have encouraged your friends to participate as well - again, Thanks so much!

This month's quilt should go together pretty quickly.  Cut and prepare your fabrics as directed on the instruction sheet.  (Cut the sashing strips carefully, there isn't a lot of wiggle room.)

Use your favorite appliqué method to affix a bunny to the center of each of the background squares.  We used fusible web.  Simply trace the bunny shapes onto the paper side of the fusible web.  (Trace 6 facing one direction and 6 facing the reverse direction.)  Rough cut between the bunny shapes.  Iron the fusible side of the web to the wrong side of the bunny fabric.  Cut on the line and fuse to the background square with a hot iron.

Use a zig zag or blanket stitch around the edge of each bunny to secure.  We stitched with black thread to help define the bunny shapes.  Create 12 bunny blocks.

Sew the 2 ½ inch border strips around each of the bunny blocks.

Arrange the bordered blocks into 4 rows of 3 blocks.

Sew a short sashing strip between the blocks in each row.

Sew the long sashing strips between each row and to the top and bottom of the quilt.

Create the needed length from the remaining strips and sew one to each side of the quilt.

Add the 5 ½ inch borders.  Quilt as desired.  Bind and enjoy!

Have a Hippity, Hoppity, Happy Easter.

We are considering a line of outdoor prints for the April mystery quilt but haven't decided for sure.  We'll post photos as soon as we know so check back.

We have added some fun, fresh fabric to the shelves for the $5.55 sale tomorrow (March 6).  Please stop by and check them out.  Here is a sneak peek at a few of them.

Welcome Spring - February mystery quilt

The fabric collection we are using this month reminds us of some of our favorite Spring things - Cadbury mini eggs and marshmallow peeps.  (Perhaps our list of favorite things should be re-evaluated.)  Really though, the colors and patterns are soft and reminiscent of Spring and the renewal of life that accompanies it.  With a little time and effort it will become part of your Springtime celebration.  Enjoy!

Sew the strips together in sets of two along the length to create 18 sets.  Press.

We used the 6½ inch triangle square up ruler from Quilt in a Day to cut the triangles.  (We have created a template if you don’t have the ruler.)  Place the 6¼ inch line (or the bottom of the template) on the bottom of a strip set.

Trim both sides then place the 6¼ inch line on the top of the strip and cut.

Continue alternating in this fashion to cut 8 triangles from each of the strip sets.

Notice you have 4 triangles with one fabric dominant and four with the opposite fabric dominant.  You will use two of each to form the quilt block

Sew four of the triangle sections together to form a quilt block.  Pay attention to the placement of the triangles.

Repeat to create 36 blocks.

Arrange and sew the blocks into rows of 6.

Sew these rows into one section with 4 rows and one section with two rows.

Trace and cut out the flower appliqués.  Use your favorite appliqué method to attach the flowers to the background.  (We did simple raw edge appliqué.)

Sew the appliqué section between the two block sections.

Sew the 1 ½ inch first border all around the quilt.

Add the final 4 inch border.

Quilt and bind.

Thanks so much for doing the monthly mystery quilts with us.  Please spread the word and tell your friends.

We will post a photo of the March fabrics as soon as we decide what will be used.

Somewhere in Time photo

Becky got our Somewhere in Time quilt all finished.  (It's my new favorite - until she gets the next one done.)

We have had a few requests for a photo on the blog for those of you who are putting it all together.   The color is a little off but it should help with the layout and placement of the quilt.  Have fun and thanks for participating!

New Block party and other stuff

Just a reminder of a few things going on here at the shop.

We are starting the new block party this Saturday (Feb. 14th).  Becky spent a good chunk of the day yesterday sewing blocks together to give you a better idea of the finished quilt.  Here is what we have so far.

We still have openings if you haven't already signed up.  It is a $15.00 sign up fee and $5.00 per session which covers the 20 blocks.  We will complete two identical blocks each session.  We are planning a demo lecture every other Saturday at 10:00 am.

Come join us!

Also....
Tomorrow is our monthly $5.55 fabric sale.  We have two shelves full of fabric for a great price.  Come in and save.

And...
We finally decided on a fabric line for the mystery quilt this month.  We will be using "A Beautiful Thing" line from Riley Blake Designs.  A few of the fabrics are shown in the photo below.

It looks like a fun collection to welcome Spring to me.  Come and make a quilt for only $29.00.  Call us at 801-465-9133 to reserve your kit.

If you don't live in our area and would like to participate - we can ship the kit in a flat rate envelope for only $6.00.

See you soon.
