Campin' Out - March 2013 mystery quilt

Summer camping time is fast approaching.  You will be ready for your next camp-out with this outdoor themed quilt.
This is an uncomplicated quilt created with squares from the panel and alternate quarter triangle square blocks.

Follow the directions in the pattern for cutting the fabrics.

Draw a diagonal line on the back of the light 8 1/4 inch squares.  Match, right sides together, with the 8 1/4 inch dark squares.

Sew a scant ¼ inch on each side of the drawn line. Cut on the line.

Press seams toward the dark fabric.

Match the resulting half square triangles right sides together with opposite fabrics touching.   Draw a diagonal line on the back of one of the triangle squares, perpendicular to the seam line.

Sew a scant 1/4 inch on each side of the line and then cut on the line.

Press open and square the resulting blocks to 7 1/4 inches. Create a total of 24) quarter triangle squares.

Sew the body of the quilt together alternating the squares from the panel with the quarter square triangles.

In order to create the interlocking star pattern through the quilt you will need to pay close attention to the direction of the quarter square triangle blocks.  In the first row the dark triangles will be on the sides of the blocks.  In the second row the dark triangles will be on the top and bottom of the blocks as you see in the photo above.  You will sew 7 rows with 7 blocks to create the body of the quilt.  The first row will start and end with a panel square.  The second row will start and end with a quarter square triangle block.  Continue alternating in this fashion until all seven rows are completed.

Sew the 2 ½ inch first border to the quilt.

Sew six of the 8 1/4 inch rectangles and the 3 3/4 x 4 inch bear patch together end to end alternating lights and darks. Repeat with the remaining rectangles and fox square.

Sew one of these strips to the top of the quilt and one to the bottom.

Sew a 2 inch yellow all around the quilt.

Sew the 6 inch final border to the sides of the quilt.  Complete by sewing 6 inch borders to the top and bottom.  (Note: the fabric allotted for the borders requires straight seams.  If you choose to join the strips diagonally you will need additional fabric.)

Quilt as desired.  Bind and enjoy!  Happy Camping!

Becky is planning next month's quilt with chevrons, dot, stripes and checks from Riley Blake designs.  We will post a photo as soon as we can.  Thanks for participating in our mystery quilt program.  We think they are not only fun but a great value.  Please help us spread the word.

What fabrics would you like to see used in future mystery quilts?  We are somewhat limited but we will be happy to look for collections that interest you.  We would love to hear from you.  Please leave us a comment.
