Wintertime - October 2014 mystery quilt

The village Houses

Draw a diagonal line on the back of the 5 ½ inch roof background squares.  Place one on either end of the 5 ½ x 10 inch roof piece.

Sew on the drawn line.  Cut ¼ inch away from the line and press.

Repeat on the other end of the roof rectangle.

Sew the shutter pieces to both ends of the window pieces.  Sew the house pieces to each end of this unit.

Sew the roof and rows together as shown to complete the house.

Complete three houses and sew side by side to create the village row.

The Holiday Wreath

Draw a diagonal line on the back of each of the 4 ¼” dark green squares.  Place on corners of the 8” background square.  Sew on the drawn line.  Trim ¼ inch from the line and press back.  Repeat on all four corners.

Place the 5 1/4” medium green and the 5 1/4” background with the right sides together.  (Note: The printed instructions refer to 5 1/2 " green and background.  They should be 5 1/4 inch.) Draw a diagonal line on the back of the background square.  Sew ¼ inch on both sides of the drawn line.  Cut on the line and press.

Repeat with the other white and green 5 1/4  inch squares.  Place each of these half square triangles with a 4 ¾” dark green square.  Draw a diagonal line on the back of the background/green square perpendicular to the seam.  Sew ¼ inch on both sides of the line.  Cut on the line and press.

Square these patches to 4 ¼” x 4 ¼”.

Repeat with the remaining green and half square triangles.

Assemble the components to create the wreath.

Pinwheels

Place a red and a green square together with right sides facing.   Draw two diagonal lines on the back of one of the fabrics.

Sew ¼ inch from both lines.  Cut on the lines and through the center of the 7 inch square horizontally and vertically.

Trim each ½ square triangle to 3 inches and press open.  (We love the triangle square up ruler by Quilt in a Day for this task.)

Repeat with remaining 7 inch squares.

Sew the half square triangles together to create six pinwheel blocks.  Sew the pinwheels together to create two rows with three blocks in each.

Sew one row to the top of the wreath and one to the bottom of the wreath.

Use the same method to create the smaller pinwheels.  Trim the half triangle squares to 2 1/2 inches.  Sew into two rows with four pinwheels in a row.  Alternate the red and the green.

The Snowman
Follow the instructions to complete the snowman block.  We chose to use fusible interfacing to applique the snowman so the background fabric wouldn't show through as much.  Here is a photo to help with placement.

Sew the 4 inch pinwheel rows to the top and bottom of the snowman.

The Tree
We used fusible web for most of the applique.  Quick and simple.  Here are photos to use as placement guides for the tree and mittens.

Completing the quilt

Sew the mitten block to the top of the wreath/pinwheel section.

Sew the tree to the right of the wreath section.

Sew the village houses to the bottom of the tree/wreath section.

Sew the snowman to the left of this section.

Cut the green swirl fabric 3 inches and sew all around the quilt.

Cut the red stripe 5 ½ inches.  Sew to the top and bottom of the quilt.

Quilt as desired.  Bind and enjoy!

Happy Wintertime!

Thanks so much for participating in our mystery quilt program.

We have not decided on fabrics for November yet.  We will post a photo as soon as we can.
