January 2015 Mystery Quilt

Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the back of all of the 4 inch squares.  Line two of these squares on a 7 ½ inch square as illustrated.

Sew a scant ¼ inch on each side of the line.   Cut on the line and press the triangles back.

Place a 4 inch square on the corner of each of the resulting halves as illustrated.

Sew ¼ inch on both sides of the line.  Cut on the line and press the triangle back.

Square the resulting flying geese to measure 3 ½ x 6 ½ inches.

Repeat the process, using all of the 7 ½ and 4 inch squares.  Create a total of 96) flying geese units.

Sew the flying geese units into 48) sets of two.  (You can choose how you want to distribute the different prints.  We used two different prints in each block to create a pinwheel effect.)  Create the blocks by sewing 4 of the flying geese sets together changing the direction of each set .

To assemble the quilt sew a 2 ½ inch sashing strip between two blocks to create a row.  Repeat four times to create 4 rows.  Sew 2 ½ inch square cornerstones between 3) 2 ½ x 12 ½ inch strips.  Create 3 of these rows and sew between the 4 flying geese rows.  Sew the 2 ½ inch sashing strips to the top and bottom of the quilt and then to the sides.  Sew the 5 ½ inch final border to all sides.

Quilt as desired.  Bind and enjoy!

New Block Party!

Becky has really been busy the past few weeks.  We are getting ready for one of our favorite retreats coming up the first week in February.  And as many of you know, we will be starting a new block party next month.  In fact, the first session will be on February 14.  (Happy Valentines day - give yourself a gift!)

We have planned a beautiful sampler quilt using civil war reproduction fabrics from Penny Rose Designs.  Here are some of the blocks we have created.

We will be doing two identical blocks each session with a total of 10 sessions.  The quilt will be set on point with the alternate blocks you see in the photo.  Coordinating borders will create a bed size quilt (not sure of the exact size yet).

The working title is "Recipes from the past" and will include many old time favorite recipes.  (If you have any to share, we would love to consider them.)  Who knows, we may even sample some of the recipes on Saturdays.

We have plenty of openings.  A $15.00 sign up fee and $5.00 per session will get you all twenty sampler blocks.  We will have finishing kits available at an additional cost for those who would like to complete it as we do.  Call us at 801-465-9133 to sign up.

Please pass the word to all your friends.  Have them follow us on our blog to receive more details of upcoming events.

Happy Monday!

Valentine's anyone?

While Becky was at the Riley Blake warehouse yesterday she came across a fun valentine heart print.

The creative folks at Riley Blake had used the hearts to create a valentine's banner. Here is Becky's version of the banner.

It was a really simple heat and bond project that worked up quickly.

Press the heat and bond to the back of the heart fabric.  Cut out the desired number of hearts.

To create the banner pieces cut a couple of 6 inch strips of heat and bond.  Cut the black fabric to twelve inches wide.  Place the fusible along the edge of the black fabric and press to bond.

Remove the paper from the Heat and Bond.  Fold the other half of the fabric over and press to bond.

Trim into 3 1/2  inch sections.

Mark the points on the pennants and cut them out.

Fuse the hearts in place.

Sew the pennants to ribbon and hang in place.  We were in a hurry and didn't shop for ribbon so we used some leftover bias binding.

We have kits.

Happy Valentines!

We just wanted to send a quick reminder - the Friday, $5.55  sale is tomorrow!  (The warehouse was closed last week so we pushed it back one week.)

We are putting new bolts on the shelf as I am typing.

Stop in tomorrow and save!

January mystery quilt will be based around the fabric seen below.  Becky is working on another cute one.  Give us a call to sign up - 801-465-9133.
