Sewing:
(Note - The following instruction are for chickens facing left. If you want to create chickens facing opposite directions, you will need to reverse the beak and wing on one chicken.)
Draw a diagonal line on the back of all the 4” background squares. Place right sides together and outside edges aligned with the 4” print squares. Sew ¼” on each side of the drawn line. Cut on the line and square to 3½” inches. Press toward the print fabric.
To create the beaks, draw a diagonal line on the back of each of the 1½” gold squares. Place a square on the bottom of a 1½” x 3” background strip with the right sides together and outside edges aligned. Pay attention to the direction of the diagonal line so the beak lines up properly.
Sew on the drawn line. Cut ¼” from the line and press toward the gold. Repeat to create 2 beak units. Sew a 1½” x 7½” background strip to the gold end of each beak unit.
Assemble the chicken block by sewing matching half-square triangles to each side of a 3½” x 4½” background rectangle. Sew this unit to the top of a matching 4½” x 10½” print rectangle. Sew two more matching half-square triangles to each side of a 3½” x 4½” print rectangle. Sew this to the bottom of the chicken unit. (Refer to the diagram for proper direction and placement.)
Sew the beak unit to the left side of the block.
Sew the 1½” x 10½” background strip to the right side of the chicken. Sew a 1½” x 12½” to the top and bottom of block.
Choose your favorite method of appliqué to attach the wing and the comb to the chicken blocks.
(The photo at the top shows the combs placed down the head slightly. We think they look better if they are placed at the top of the head as in the photo below.
(If you want to make an entire chicken quilt, we have kits available for this one.)
