Farmland

Wow!  It's been quite a month!  Our daughter's wedding was last Thursday (Doesn't she make a pretty picture?). The wedding day worked out perfectly but put us a little behind on other projects.  We'll post some more photos as soon as we get them from the photographer.

Becky finally sewed the borders on the mystery quilt this morning just in the nick of time.  Here we go with the tutorial.

We'll start with the churndash blocks.

Place two 4 x 8 inch rectangles right sides together with the outside edges aligned.  Draw a diagonal line from the top corner to the middle bottom point.  Draw another diagonal line from the remaining top corner to the bottom middle.  Sew ¼ inch on both sides of the lines.  Cut apart down the middle and on each diagonal line.

Square the resulting block to 3 ½ inches.  (Quilt in a day triangle square up ruler works well for this.)  Trim the excess seam points and press toward the darker fabric.

Sew two contrasting 2 x 3 1/2 inch rectangles along the length to complete four rail units as shown below.

Assemble the components as shown below.

Repeat with different fabrics to create a total of four blocks.

From leftover fabrics cut 3) 1 ½ x 9 ½ inch strips (we used the orange small print).  Sew these between the four churn dash blocks to form a row.

Next we'll work on the star blocks.

You can create the star points using half square triangles or flying geese.  If you have the 3 x 6 flying geese ruler by Quilt in a Day, follow the instructions to create four 3 x 6 (finished size) flying geese units.

Place the two 8 inch squares right sides together with the outside edges aligned.  On the back of one the fabrics draw two diagonal lines.

Sew ¼ inch on each side of both lines.  Cut down the center vertically and horizontally as well as on the drawn diagonal lines.

Trim each half square triangle to measure 3 ½ inches.  Trim excess seam points and press.

Assemble the components as in star block below.

Repeat with different fabric combinations to create a total of four star blocks.

From leftover fabrics (we used the maroon) cut 3) 1½ x 12½ inch strips.  Sew these between the four star blocks to form a row.

Measure the length of the star row.  (It should measure 51 ½ inches long.)  Cut the green background fabric 21 x 51 ½ inches.  (Adjust the length to fit the star row if needed.)  Sew the star row to the left side of the green background.

From the green background, cut a piece 9 ½ x 12 ½ inches.  (Adjust length to fit your quilt if different.)  Sew to the top of the churn dash row.  Sew the churn dash unit to the right side of the green background section.

From the black and white check cut 4) 2 inch bias strips from the longest section of the fabric.  Use the remaining corner sections for the leaves.

Sew the four bias strips together end to end.  Place as desired on the background fabric and stitch in place.

Cut the leaves and petals and place as desired.  Use a little Elmer's washable school glue to hold in place.  Stitch about 1/4 inch from the edges to secure.  (We used a raw edge appliqué.  Use the method you prefer.)

Cut the first border (green) 2 ½ inches.  Sew to quilt.

Second border (check) is cut 1 ½ inches.  Sew to quilt.

Final border is cut 6 inches.  Sew to quilt.

Quilt as desired.  Bind and enjoy!
