April Mystery (Wilderness Trail)

We don't often run across nice guy fabric so we were happy to find the Trail Mix collection from Riley Blake Designs.  We wanted to keep the pattern simple and quick.  It turned out to be just that.  It went together so quickly that the quilt was pieced before we realized we hadn't taken any photos for the tutorial.  We are, however, working on a girlie version of the same pattern so we will use it for the demo photos.

Use an accurate ¼ inch seam allowance throughout.

Randomly sew 13 of the 5 inch squares together to create a strip set.

Couldn't get all 13 in the photo but you get the idea.
Repeat to create a total of 6 sets.

Measure the length of the strips of squares (they should be about 58 1/2 inches long).  Create five strips the needed length from the 5 inch focus fabric.  Create 10 strips of the same length from the 1 inch sashing strips.  Sew a 1 inch sashing strip to both sides of the focus fabric strips.  Repeat to create 5 sets.

Sew these units between the strips of squares.  Sew the remaining 1 inch brown strips all around the quilt.

Add the borders.  (Note: You will need to join with straight seems as there is not enough fabric to join the borders diagonally.)

Quilt as desired.  Bind and enjoy!

Hippity Hoppity - March mystery quilt is here

Spring is here!  The weather has been wonderful and the sunshine renews the soul.

In celebration of the annual renewal of life, Becky has designed a quilt to celebrate the Spring season.  It's as colorful and cute as a bed of newly blossoming spring flowers.

Before we get started, we just want to thank you for participating in our mystery quilt program.  We appreciate your support and look forward to visiting with you each month as you pick up your kits.  Many of you have encouraged your friends to participate as well - again, Thanks so much!

This month's quilt should go together pretty quickly.  Cut and prepare your fabrics as directed on the instruction sheet.  (Cut the sashing strips carefully, there isn't a lot of wiggle room.)

Use your favorite appliqué method to affix a bunny to the center of each of the background squares.  We used fusible web.  Simply trace the bunny shapes onto the paper side of the fusible web.  (Trace 6 facing one direction and 6 facing the reverse direction.)  Rough cut between the bunny shapes.  Iron the fusible side of the web to the wrong side of the bunny fabric.  Cut on the line and fuse to the background square with a hot iron.

Use a zig zag or blanket stitch around the edge of each bunny to secure.  We stitched with black thread to help define the bunny shapes.  Create 12 bunny blocks.

Sew the 2 ½ inch border strips around each of the bunny blocks.

Arrange the bordered blocks into 4 rows of 3 blocks.

Sew a short sashing strip between the blocks in each row.

Sew the long sashing strips between each row and to the top and bottom of the quilt.

Create the needed length from the remaining strips and sew one to each side of the quilt.

Add the 5 ½ inch borders.  Quilt as desired.  Bind and enjoy!

Have a Hippity, Hoppity, Happy Easter.

We are considering a line of outdoor prints for the April mystery quilt but haven't decided for sure.  We'll post photos as soon as we know so check back.
