May Mystery quilt sparkling stars

Note: In the printed pattern we have you cut 31) 3 1/4 inch sashing strips.  It should read 3 1/2 inch.  Please make this correction on your pattern.

We have had fun preparing two samples of the mystery quilt this month.  We still can't decide which one we like the best.  We're thinking we may just use one for Spring and Summer and the other for Fall and Winter and enjoy them both.

The print strips are pre-cut in your kits.  Follow the cutting instructions to cut all of the background and borders.  (The dark kits have scrappy backgrounds for the 25 patch blocks.  The light kits use the same throughout.)

Sew 15 print strips to a background strip along the length of the strips.  Press toward the print strips.

Cut each of these strips into 2 1/2 inch sections.

Cut the last two print strips into 2 1/2 inch squares.

To create the 25 patch blocks we sewed the two patch units into 3 sections as shown below.  Plan so there is a print square in each corner.

Use the extra 2 1/2 inch print squares to finish the single section.  (Looking at the photo I just realized the sections are placed incorrectly.  The single row should go on the other end to create the 25 patch - but hopefully, you get the idea.)

Press the seams in opposite directions and sew together to create the 20) 25 patch squares.

Draw a diagonal line on the back of each of the 96) 1 1/4 inch star fabric squares.  Place a square on one side of a 1 1/4 x 2 inch background rectangle.

Sew on the drawn line.  Trim 1/4 inch from the line and press back.

Repeat on the other side of the rectangle.

Repeat to create 48 flying geese units.

Assemble using the 1 1/4 inch background squares and the 2 inch star squares to create 12 sparkling stars.  Stars should measure 3 1/2 inches square.

Arrange the blocks into rows of 4 blocks.  Sew a sashing strip between each of the blocks.  Create 5 rows.

Arrange 4 sashing strips end to end.  Sew a star between the four strips.  Sew 4 sashing rows.

Sew a sashing row between each of the 25 patch rows being careful to line up the seams so the stars fall into place correctly.

Sew the background strips all around the quilt.

We chose to add an optional 6 inch border around both quilts.

We plan on using fabric from the "School Days" collection for the June Mystery quilt.  Sign up today!  Just call us at 801-465-9133.
