2018 Second Saturday Sampler

Thanks for joining us as we begin the 2018 Second Saturday Sampler quilt.  We will post directions for a new block the second Saturday of each month.

Most of the blocks are created using half square triangles.   Let's begin by going over the basics of creating a half square triangle.

Block one uses 8 four inch blue squares and 8 four inch grey polka-dot squares.

Start by drawing a diagonal line on the back of each of the 4" grey polka-dot squares.

Place each of the polka dot squares with one of the blue print squares with the right sides together and the outside edges aligned.

Sew 1/4 inch on each side of the drawn line.

Cut on the line.

Square the triangle to 3 1/2 inches.  (We find the 6 1/2 inch triangle square up ruler from Quilt in a Day really useful for this step.)

Trim the seam points.

Press toward the blue.

Create a total of 16 half square triangles.   Refer to the photo below to arrange the squares to complete the block.

Block one is done and you are on your way to completing a beautiful quilt.
